Imagination
and a Pencil…
Illustrating Children’s Books
A
Visit with Matt Phelan
What
does an illustrator do and how does he or she do it? Matt introduces
students to the creative process by showing the steps he follows in creating
books from early sketches to finished illustrations.
Each
session (45 minutes – 1 hour) can be tailored to specific grades
or age groups, focusing on picture books, illustrated chapter books, the
publication process, or a combination of all these topics. Grades 1-8,
high school, college, or adult seminars.
Class
participation, creativity exercises, and drawing demonstrations help make
the sessions active and fun. Book signings can follow the visit (schools/libraries
are responsible for ordering books in advance).
